Haumoana Ratepayers Association meeting - 13 April 2010

Minutes of monthly meeting held 13 April 2010

Held at Gannets Bar, Haumoana - meeting opened at 7.36pm
Present: Wendy Van Hooijdonk, Owen Muliss, Rex Mildenhall, Andy Heyward
Apologies: Mel Fowler
Minutes from last meeting moved by Wendy and seconded by Andy
Incoming Correspondence: Nil

General Business:
Civil Defence Warning System: Owen reported on the progress of the working group to create a warning system for the area. They were waiting on Warren Waldrom to call the next meeting. Money is available to develop an early warning system. The working party and council will work together to come up with a solution. There is no idea of the time frame at this stage. A newsletter of the process is needed to get out to the community.
Owen also said more information was needed to go out to the communities about emergency evacuation. The last two voluntary evacuations have been a shambles with a third of the community evacuating a third not realising there was an emergency and a third not caring and actively going to the beach to watch a Tsunami. Local Civil Defence is ill prepared for an emergency. Rex said Radio was the most reliable source of information at the moment.

Beach Clean Up: No information on how the Beach Clean up went or how many attended.

Mid-Winter Bonfire: Rex will ask around to see if someone wants to run and judge the surfcasting competition as part of the Mid-Winter Bonfire. Planning will need to be initiated at the next meeting.

Tagging: Owen reported that more tagging had shown up on the Playcentre. He said there was a wall at Memorial Park put aside by the Parks Committee for tagging.

Amalgamation: Rex proposed the possibility of combining TAPA (Te Awanga Progressive Association) and the Haumoana Ratepayers Association. Both groups are in a desperate need of members and are weak as a result. TAPA was on the verge of folding because of the lack of members. HRA is in a similar position. Council is not informing either group about issues and the groups aren’t functioning as a voice of the people to council. Rex thought that by combining the two groups the coast area would have a stronger voice and more members to continue. The existing events held by each group would be continued with more support from additional helpers and members. If combined, sub committees within the group could organise the different fun events. ie. Progressive Dinner, Lemon Day, Bonfire etc. This was proposed as an idea at this stage and more informal talks with Tapa is needed to gauge the support and the legal implications of combining.

Meeting closed at 8.05pm

Next Meeting is Tuesday 11th May, 7.30pm, Gannets Bar, Haumoana.
