Haumoana School has been holding its annual Arts in the Park Haumoana Market Day on the first Sunday of November for the last fourteen years. Each year the Market Day has grown in both the size of the event, and in the number of people attending. Last year over 240 stall holders exhibited and it was estimated close on 15,000 people attended the event.
This year the Market Day will be held on Sunday 6 November 2011 (with a rained-off day of the following Sunday 13 November).
The Market Day draws on support from the larger Haumoana – Te Awanga – Tuki Tuki Valley area with almost all of the school’s 130 families involved in some way either leading up to the event or on the day.
Although Haumoana Market Day is entirely run by volunteers, it is very professional in its organisation – a fact that was acknowledged by the winning of the Hawke’s Bay Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Special Event award in 2000 and 2007.
The event is attended by stallholders from throughout Hawke’s Bay, and as far afield as New Plymouth, Waikato, Wairarapa and Wellington. The range is many and varied – from art, imported furniture, clothing, crafts, garden ornaments and naturally all types of food imaginable.
There is a great atmosphere of bonhomie created on the day. Napier Boys’ High School’s pipe band heralds the opening and local musicians and the school’s own kapa haka group and choir perform throughout the day. Naturally the school’s community is out in force to take advantage of this fundraising opportunity with lucky wheel, rat races, art auction, sausage and steak sandwich stalls and much more. There’s plenty of family entertainment and activities including pony rides, face-painting, spin-art and a host of children’s rides.
All money raised from the Haumoana Market Day goes directly to Haumoana School to enhance the learning environment of its 160ish pupils. Our adventure playground, info-tech suite, new gymnasium/hall, specialised surround-sound audio units for every classroom, significant IT upgrade and improvements to our classrooms and buildings are all projects funded by past Market Days. Late last year, the Board of Trustees consulted widely with the community and as a result is developing a Strategic Plan incorporating the feedback. As soon as it’s finalised, Haumoana Home and School will be looking to see where we can help. High on the list were things like a seasonal garden and more challenging play areas….sounds great!
We hope you will join us for what is a Red Letter Day on the Hawke’s Bay events calendar.
